If You Want To Lose Weight Really Fast. . . Do it slow!

by on June 8, 2010

Of course you want to lose weight really fast! In todays world of I want it and I want it now, we want everything fast! We want our cars fast, our internet fast, our food fast, (which is one of the reasons there are so many overweight people), and we want to lose weight and build muscle fast! Oh, and we also want to get rich fast, which is why we see so many people playing the lottery everyday.

I am all for getting things fast, but in reality you have a better chance of keeping the weight off if you lose it slowly. Most of the diets that you see that guarantee you will lose 10 lbs in a week either don’t work or are only going to cause you to lose water weight.

[Remember this scene from Something About Mary? It's pretty hilarious with the 7 minute abs!]

If you are serious about losing weight, you should concentrate on changing your lifestyle and food habits and try and lose around a pound or two at most per week. It may not seem like much but over the course of a few months, you will be well on your way to losing fat versus water weight, and more importantly keeping it off.

I have been using intermittent fasting for a while now and I can usually lose around 2 lbs per week. I have actually quit doing it as much as I used to because I am real close to where I want to be with my weight and don’t need to lose much more. If I would of tried some crazy crash diet and lost a bunch of weight the first month or so, I am convinced that I would of put it all back on and felt worse than I did before I started. I know, because I see people do this all the time.

So as much as we love to get things fast, show a little patience and go at this fitness and weight loss endeavor for the long haul. Remember the turtle and the hare? Be a turtle and plan on being in great shape not only now, but for the rest of your life. You will be glad that you did and you will be healthier than if you try some bogus diet that will not work in the long run.

Remember the saying, “If it seems too good to be true, it probably is”? Diet and exercise is the same way. Do you honestly think that after years of overeating and little exercise that someone can diet for a week or two and all of a sudden look great? Come on now, we’re a little smarter than that, right? Just get started, stick with it, and in the end you will be better off.

If you want to lose weight really fast. . . do it slow. What?!!! Well, what I am saying is that if you try some fad diet that doesn’t work and you quit versus doing it the way that I am talking about above and you stick with it, which is faster? Remember slow and steady my friend, slow and steady. I’m rooting for you.

Kelly,
Great points about trying to lose weight too fast. I’ve also had success with intermittent fasting and lost 13lbs in 3 months. I have had success in the past with very restrictive diets combined with double session exercising, but I’ve found that type of extreme leads to muscle loss along with fat loss. Slow and steady provides the best look.

Hey Kelly,

I absolutely agree. I’ve been a health nut for a long time now, and have tried just about everything at this point. Although I’ve fluctuated a bit over time, I am definitely in the best shape right now that I have ever been. I didn’t worry about getting it “right” from the start. I just hit the ground running with whatever I had, sought out new information, and implemented them into my life.

yes long term is how we should think therefore the words nutrition rather than diet should always be used
I uses fasting too to stimulate fat loss but always back off when I start getting where I want to be but its a great starter

Dave,
After reading your comment, I had a funny thought. Guys like us have to actually tone it down a bit so we don’t lose too much weight and then there are people that do basically nothing and can’t figure out why they can’t lose any weight! I too have to watch with fasting because some times I can go to the extreme and start to look too skinny, too fast.

Darrin,
I actually feel that I am in the best shape of my life now too. That’s the great thing about working out and age, we aren’t handcuffed by getting older to become old and fat! We can and will get older, but we don’t have to look like it! Though judging by what some of the 20 year olds look like today, I think I’m in better shape! Is this the worst shaped generation ever? We went to an amusement park last week and I’ve never seen more overweight girls trying to stuff themselves in to clothes three sizes too small in my entire life! I guess bikini tops and beer bellies are supposed to be in fashion now?

Raymond,
That is a really good way of looking at it, [nutrition rather than diet]. Wow, I never really thought of it that way before. Thanks for that perspective, I am going to steal that one off of you! LOL

After a long wait and shrewd patience we should be rewarded with something like this.I don’t usually feel like I need a lot of advice, but your articles keep me interested, I often learn something and they keep me motivated. So thanks for shaking it up. Loosing weight slowly sure helps a lot when you want to have a healthy diet. It really helps. Thanks for sharing your ideas about this.
