Kelly,

I couldn't agree more with your perspective. There really aren't any shortcuts when it comes to getting lean and fit. It's all about discipline, hard work, and sacrifice. No matter what techniques you use (diet, training, etc.), you must stick with it long-term because that is the only way to achieve results.

Hi Kelly, I'm a huge fan of Eat Stop Eat and Visual Impact. I have been living the ESE lifestyle for almost 3 years now and I absolutely love it. In terms of muscle building and putting the muscles in all the right spots, Visual Impact is a great program for that. This is the first muscle building program I ever tried and I'm glad I didn't have to look for another one.

Hey Kelly, Powerful article!
It's fantastic how you are so passionate about telling people how it is. Need more of it on the web.
I can hear (or at least read) the frustration in your voice " why can't we get it right" but FOCUS is definitely the key.
Start with that and you can't go wrong.
I hope a lot of people read this and also watch the video I don't normally get too wound up but that guy is pretty inspirational, it makes all my issues seem irrevalent.

I have a shake almost every single morning. I add a couple of handfuls of spinach or even kale. I find that the taste of the bananas is strong enough to hide the greens while still getting all the nutritional power.

I've never tried a shake with peanut butter but it makes sense, great suggestion.

A Workout journal is almost a must, at least for me. I only started making consistent gains, once I got a workout journal. makes a huge difference to know where you left off and where you need to be, at the same time if today you are able to push more weight you can prepare for your next workouts by increasing the weight that you start with.

Great points, plus I like the video. That girl is practicing her dance dance revolution!

Alykhan,

That's a great way to do it. This is actually a form of visualization that you are doing. When you look over and plan what you want to do, you set it in motion in your mind. There are numerous studies that show that this will help you to do the weight and reps that you plan. If more people would plan what they are going to do each workout, they would make much better progress.

Kelly,

I'm glad you mentioned keeping a workout journal. I track all of my workouts in Excel with the progression goal in mind. I like to write down exercises, sets, and reps before I workout so that I have a plan in mind beforehand and I'm not just going into my workouts without any direction.

Leslie,
You should actually try different rep schemes and see how your body reacts to them. I kind of use my body as a laboratory and try different things out. That being said, I would try and keep your reps around 10-12 and sometimes even as high as 15. Go at a pretty decent pace, around 45-60 seconds rest between sets and keep your carbs low. You most likely have enough muscle and if you get leaner, you will look way more toned and muscular. Don't worry about going too heavy. If you go fast in between sets, you are not going to be able to go that heavy anyways. Try and get your carbs from fresh fruits and vegetables, while keeping your pasta, rice, breads, and potato intake low. Of course, stay away from the sugars and empty calories as well. It may seem like it's hard to do, but it really isn't because you can eat a lot of red meats, chicken, turkey, fish, etc. Don't be afraid of the fats either. If you are not taking in too many carbs, a little fat isn't going to be an issue. The leaner you get, the more toned you will look, even if you didn't gain any muscle.
